SIZE & FIT
NOTE: When using any helmet with a Spin Dial adjuster, do not over-tighten. Choose your size by measuring up and checking our Nutcase Perfect Fit Guide
Q. My child is 1 year old, will the Little Nutty helmet fit?
Our lightweight Baby Nutty range is designed for babies aged 1 year to approximately 2.5 or 3 years old.
We don't recommend Little Nutty for any child aged 2.5 years old or less as young children need time to develop neck strength in order to have optimal benefit from a helmet.
Little Nutty is designed for use by toddlers aged approximately 3-6 years with a head circumference measuring 46cm - 52cm. It is adjustable to the maximum size with a Spin Dial.
Q. When is it safe for a baby to use a Nutcase helmet?
We receive many questions from parents, with children aged 6 weeks onward, who wish to ride with them in a bike seat, trailer or chariot. No studies we are aware of have recommended that it is safe for children this young to ride in bike seats, trailers or chariots - even if they have a helmet fitted. In some cities, such as New York, it is prohibited to ride with a child under 12 months.
Trailers/chariots are close to the road and parents often forget how rough the ride can be. A normal slow ride can present serious jolts to a young baby's neck. Adult riders also need to be competent to avoid the most common crashes (which occur standing still).
We recommend seeking advice from a medical professional such as your Paediatrician or Baby Health Nurse if you are unsure.
Q. My toddler measures 51cm already. I want to save some money, should I go up a size?
Helmets, bicycles or any piece of equipment which does not fit the rider properly can be dangerous at worst and uncomfortable at least.
As a guide, children do the most amount of growth in their entire lives between the short time of birth to 12 months old. They grow approximately 25 cm on average in just 1 year! After that, growth is incremental. The next growth spurt is puberty (8-13 years for girls, 10-15 years for boys). Then its onto adulthood between ages 17-21.
For any helmet to be used optimally, it must be fitted properly: ensure you measure up, adjust the straps, insert the right thickness of foam pads and use the spin dial adjuster gently (do not over-tighten).
The Gen 3 Nutcase Street helmets measurements range from 52 - 60cm. Even with the thickest padding inserted in the Small (52-56cm) to bring it down to 52cm, your toddler will be wearing a pretty big helmet shell (max 56cm) for a long time.
Strap adjustments may not prevent the oversized helmet from slipping backwards on a toddler. If the toddler experiences a fall and the helmet has slippage, it may not protect their temples and frontal lobe adequately.
See the Nutcase Perfect Fit Guide and always measure your child. Or, ideally, fit the helmet at one of our Nutcase Dealer stores if your child is on the size threshold and you are unsure.
Q. My measurement is on the border of your sizes, how do I choose the right size?
All kids and adults are different in size and shape.
In general babies aged 1+ fit into the Baby Nutty range. Sometimes babies aged 2.5 years will be strong and sized well enough for a Little Nutty.
For Snow helmets, if you are in between sizes - we suggest going up a size for better fit due to extra felt winter lining in the helmet.
On each Product page you will also see a shape reference (rounded, slim fit) and this will help with your decision as well.
Q. How do I create a custom fit for Street and Little Nutty helmets?
Little Nutty and Street helmets are fitted with a Spin Dial Fit System, see instructions in the box and below. Over-tightening the spinner may seize the system. If you need a snugger fit, the helmet may need the thicker padding set from your helmet box. Remove the default pads, and replace with thicker or thinner pads to customise.
Baby Nutty has a soft velcro Fit System.
Q. I want to buy my Nutcase Helmet overseas. Are the safety standards the same?
Nutcase Helmets sold in Australia comply with ASNZS 2008:2063 Standard for Bicycle Helmets as required by law.
Nutcase Helmets produced for the Americas, Europe, Japan and Korea comply with specific bicycle safety standards for those regions only. The helmets are also a different size, density and shape for those markets.
Nutcase has distribution agreements in place to ensure the right helmet is available for customers in each country. We would caution customers from purchasing on grey market or similar auction sites in case the helmet is second-hand and has been involved in a fall or crash.
For Australasia, Nutcase Helmets have been produced to comply with the following safety standards:
Our Snow helmets comply with ASTM F2040 Safety Standard for Recreational Snow Sports or CE EN 1077 for Alpine Skiing.
Q. Can I wear a Nutcase Street helmet for Snow or Water purposes?
Safety standards are devised worldwide for many different products to ensure the product has been designed for that activity.
Nutcase Street Helmets are designed for bicycle and other street activities such as skate and roller/scooter sports and they comply with the safety standard ASNZS 2063:2008 Bicycle Helmet standard.
Some customers choose to add a beanie to their Street helmet for Snow use, as Australia does not have mandatory Snow helmet laws. However we cannot guarantee the Street or Bicycle helmet range will perform the safety function required on the ski fields.
The Street helmet is not suitable construction for Water sports.
Q. Can I wear a Nutcase Snow helmet for Street/Bike purposes?
Only helmets which comply with the safety standard ASNZS 2063:2008 for Bicycle Helmets are tested, designed, constructed and made for suitable-use in Street based activities such as bike riding, skating, roller skating or foot-scooters in Australia.
Nutcase Snow helmets are have snow grates, are heavier and are fleece lined and would be too hot for most Street activities.

Q. I think I've chosen the wrong size / colour / changed my mind / received a gift I want to change...help!
Q. Can I exchange my online-bought helmet at a Dealer store? Or vice versa?
If you purchased from this site, please follow the Returns & Exchanges instructions.
Nutcase Dealer Stores can only assist you if you purchased from them.
Q. I bought my helmet from a Dealer store and want to change or return it but the store won't let me. Can you help?
Nutcase Dealers abide by the same laws and regulations as all Australian businesses with regards to returns and exchanges. The Australian Consumer Law outlines your rights.
In most cases, Dealers will try to help wherever they can but may not have the style you are requesting. Please work with your retailer to come to a suitable alternative solution.
Q. I bought my helmet overseas / online overseas / Amazon / eBay International and there is something wrong, can you help?
Helmets purchased outside Australia should be returned to the original place of purchase. We are unable to warranty helmets which have been purchased on Amazon, eBay or other overseas retailers. In addition, overseas versions do not comply with Australian standards and requirements.
Q. How often should I replace my helmet?
Helmets have a normal lifespan of 2-3 years and should be replaced approximately every 2-3 years due to normal factors such as growth or wear and tear.
Nutcase Little Nutty, Street, Water and Snow helmets are classed generally as 'single impact'. If you are in a crash, serious fall or accident, the helmet should be replaced immediately. This is because the thick black/grey EPS liner which absorbs impact may be damaged. Watch this video about the science and physics of safety gear.
To extend the wear of your helmet, take care to store it inside when possible; avoid exposing it to the elements by leaving it in rain, snow or heat when not being used, avoid using thinners or abrasive cleaners on the surface and replace soft foam pads when required.
MIPS Options refer to helmets available in 2018.
Nutcase Snow is available in 2 sizes: S-M (52-57cm) and L-XL (58-62cm)
How to determine your size
1. Measure up
Measure 3 times and take the largest result in centimetres. Place tape measure slightly above ear and bring it across the mid forehead completely circling the head. Then refer to our size chart on this page.
2. Try it on
Try it on when you receive your helmet or head to a Dealer store for a fitting. When trying on, ensure the side straps and Spin Dial Fit System are adjusted. Also check if the correct size foam pads are installed. Swap to a thinner or thicker set depending on whether you are going down or up in centimetres/fit.
3. Wear it straight: Do the push test
Before riding or skating, ensure the helmet sits level on the head and does not slide or move freely when you move your head side-to-side. If it moves, the helmet is too large.
Test it side-to-side again and do the push test: When someone places a palm to your forehead they should not be able to push the helmet backwards off your head.
Helmet sizing and growth
It is recommended that wearers replace helmets every 2-3 years for growing children and when a collision or fall has occurred which may have cracked the internal EPS (grey interior) impact protection layer.
Helmets should not be worn by children when playing in playgrounds, local parks and climbing frames or 'monkey bars' as there is risk of choking or strangulation.
Check for Proper fit
- The front of the helmet must sit above the brow, straight across the temples.
- The back of the helmet must not touch the nape of your neck. If it does, it means your helmet may be slipping backwards.
- The chin strap should be snug but not too tight as to cause discomfort or choking.
- Securely fasten the chin strap and try to roll the helmet off your head. If the skin on your forehead moves slightly, you have a good fit.
- The side straps should form a clean triangle encompassing each ear area.
- Do not over tighten Adjustable Spin Dial.
